On March 2, 2017, an American Coot with a fishing hook stuck in his throat arrived at California Wildlife Center from Lake Balboa Park. Coots are also known as mud hens and live near water.[/caption]

X-rays revealed the location of the hook inside the coot’s throat, impeding his ability to eat or drink.[/caption]

Anesthesia was given before surgery.

Dr. Duane Tom, DVM, Director of Animal Care, very successfully removed the hook from the Coot’s mouth. The Coot recovered from surgery and within a day was stable enough to be transferred to our partners at International Bird Rescue for his rehabilitation.
